How to clean a Laptop

dirty-laptop-computerYour laptop is a frequently used asset. But have you taken a good look at it lately? Gross! Yeah it can get extremely grimy just like you would if you sat all day long in one spot and had everyone’s dirty hands all over you! That being said, here are a few tips for cleaning your laptop.

One thing to remember is even though your computer screen resembles a TV screen, you do not clean it the same way. If you spray Windex on your screen it will create more problems than you would care to deal with. Laptops work hard but they are very delicate. So take the soft approach.

Cleaning the Screen

Like with most all laptops, the screen will get dirty. You get finger prints on it and dare we say, you may have sneezed on it at some point. After some time, this stuff will build up on your laptop and will need to be cleaned off.

A good way to tell if your laptop screen is dirty, turn the computer off and take a good look at it. Before you scream, grab a lint-free cloth that you purchased at the computer store.

Lightly apply even pressure as you wipe dirt and dust off of the screen. Try not press too hard because it could damage the components in the monitor.  If the laptop screen is still dirty, you may want to apply some cleaner that is specifically for computer monitors. Some commercial cleaners may claim that they are safe for computers but using a cleaner that is approved is best and won’t leave a film on your screen.

Cleaning the Keyboard

One of the most unsightly places on your computer is the keyboard. Over time, dust, lint, dirt, food and other small particles will get stuck between keys. Since the keys are so close together, it is nearly impossible to clean between them with a cloth and not pop off your keys.

As an alternative, use a can of compressed air to clean your keyboard. Try to start at one end and move the dirt to the opposite side. Take some of the screen cleaner and wipe the skin oils from the keyboard keys. Lastly, take a brush and a computer vacuum to remove the remaining debris.

Try to perform this maintenance on a monthly basis. It keeps the keyboard keys from sticking and prevents you from scratching on the screen to remove dirt. Not to mention, those malicious germs will no longer linger and make you sick again! Take good care of your computer and it will take care of you.
